IAU Named a Planet after the Ancient Syrian City of Palmyra

The proposal by Syrian Astronomical Association of giving the name Palmyra to planet Errai b was approved, highlighted today several press media in Damascus.

The printed media as well as radio and television, alluded to the fact formalized by the International Astronomy Union, headquartered in Paris, France, and founded in 1919 under the principle of worldwide scientific and educational cooperation.

According to released data, Errai, also known by the Arabic name Alrai, is observed at the Cepheus constellation.

The symbolism of this action is especially relevant when Palmyra’s temples, burial towers and the Arc de Triomphe dating back more than 2,000 years were recently destroyed by terrorist groups with explosives amid the continued aggression against Syria.
